Quality of a compact scan convertor
So, is it possible to convert from VGA to s-video or component in a unit this small and come out with a good quality picture? Perhaps my experience is limited, but I would have to say, very much, no. This unit is a great idea, a small convertor that requires only usb power. For a laptop user it would be great but ultimately its the quality of the video output that lets it down. My main purpose for this was to watch DVDs through my laptop on a nice big TV screen. My TV has component input so the AverKey Lite seemed a great product. But Ive watched any number of films now and the picture quality is just poor. Mostly, its the lack of depth of colour. The best example is when there is a very dark scene. The subtle colours required to allow you to make out a poorly lit figure against a dark background are just not there. Artifacts are obvious, its like watching a low bitrate DIVX movie. Of course watch the same scene on the laptop LCD display and there is no such problem.
So while this unit is seemingly easy to use, compact and probably very well intentioned, it just fails to produce the most basic of requirements. Doing anything on a TV screen, you expect the picture to be a bit fuzzy, this is the natural limit of low def tube television technology. But we all know what a good quality encoded DVD looks like on a nice 68cm flatscreen TV and the AverKey Lite just cant convert the VGA signal with enough clarity to be acceptable.
