User-configurable RAID for speed or double-safe data protection
You can select the RAID mode that's right for you. Choose RAID 0 (striping) for the performance you need when designing or editing graphic-intensive media files. When the drive is set to RAID 1 (mirroring) it provides double-safe data protection by automatically generating a duplicate copy of your data. Set the drive to JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) to use as two individual drives and select between HFS+J or ExFAT per disk. Ideal for running Windows OS on a Mac.
Daisy chain several drives together for even faster speed
The intelligent Thunderbolt connector provides two channels of up to 10Gb/s transfer rate in both directions. This means data can travel both ways without compromising bandwidth. Add to that the power of multiple drives processing data and you get amazing speed.

About RAID

RAID is an acronym for Redundant Array of Independent Disks. With RAID enabled on a storage system you can connect two or more drives in the system so that they act like one big fast drive or set them up so that one drive in the system is used to automatically and instantaneously duplicate (or mirror) your data for real-time backup.
Which RAID mode should I use?
Speed (RAID 0)
Set in high-performance mode (also called striped mode or RAID 0) the storage system gives you the power you need when you're:

  • Designing huge graphics and need a lightning-fast Photoshop scratch space.
  • Editing DV or HD video and want a smooth work flow with no dropped frames.
  • Rendering complex 3D objects or special effects.
  • Driven to be the first geek on your block with a computer so fast it blows your socks off.
Data protection (RAID 1)

Set the system to data protection mode (also known as mirrored mode or RAID 1) and the capacity is divided in half. Half of the capacity is used to store your data and half is used for a duplicate copy. If one drive goes down your data is protected because it's duplicated.
Data protection and speed (RAID 5)

In systems with three or more drives (like our WD ShareSpace Network Storage System) we recommend that you set the system to RAID 5. This gives you the best of both worlds: fast performance by striping data across all drives; data protection by dedicating a quarter of each drive to fault tolerance leaving three quarters of the system capacity available for data storage.
Very high reliability with high performance (RAID 10 or RAID 1+0)
RAID 10 delivers very high I/O rates by striping RAID 1 (mirrored) segments. This RAID mode is good for business critical database management solutions that require maximum performance and high fault tolerance. A system set to RAID 10 yields half the total capacity of all the drives in the array. Available in WD ShareSpace systems only.
About Spanning
Spanning, which is not a RAID mode, combines all the drives in a system into one big volume so they act like one giant drive. The drives are filled up one drive at a time. The advantage of using this mode is that you can add more drives without having to reformat the system.
